The squat shouldered veined alabaster jar has a small flat base and thick convex sides with a high shoulder that is flat and narrow. A slightly raised, wide external rim, resembling a collar, surrounds the vessel’s restricted mouth. A narrow groove circumscribes the vessel just below the rim. The interior is well hollowed and rounded.
This type of vessel which appeared in limited numbers late in the 1st Dynasty, reached the height of popularity during the 2nd-3rd Dynasty. Near identical examples in the Cleveland Museum of Art indicate their provenance to the north step pyramid at Saqqara.
Ex. Connecticut Private Collection, 2000.
Ex. Paris Art Market.
