The light green glazed faience composition head amulet of the bull god, Apis, is finely depicted in its most common form, with a solar disk between horns flanked by a uraeus. His ferocious appearance is detailed by his broad nostrils and erect ears, a horizontal suspension loop at the lower back of the disk.
The Apis bull was sacred to the creator god Ptah of Memphis and also had close associations with the funerary god Osiris. Egyptians wore amulets of the Apis both to show their devotion and to improve their chances of rebirth after death.
Formerly in a Private Qatar collection, mid 1960s.
Acquired on the English art market
cf. Andrew, C; Amulets of ancient Egypt, p. 25, no. 21a-b, for an Apis bull as a sacred animal.
