Orange slip-ware, ovoid in form, the concave disk depicts a rooster facing left, the shoulders decorated with palm fronds, the central disk and nozzle pierced, pinched handle, the underside decorated with a cross and potters mark.
The history of North Africa during the period of Classical Antiquity (c. 8th century B.C. to 5th century A.D.) can be divided roughly into the history of Egypt in the east, the history of Ancient Libya in the middle and the history of Numidia (what is now Algeria and Tunisia) and Mauretania (what is now Morocco) in the West. The Roman Republic established the province of Africa in 146 B.C. after the defeat of Carthage. The Roman Empire eventually controlled the entire Mediterranean coast of Africa.
