The elongated bronze mongoose, Herpestes ichneumon, stands on a thin flat base with left legs forward, the ears indicated with incised eyes and mouth.
The ichneumon was worshipped by the ancient Egyptians as the mascot of Atum and Re of Heliopolis. It is suggested that the ichneumon served as the tracker of Atum, who relied on its excellent sense of scent. Similar examples are known to come from the lids of sarcophagi for real ichneumons.
