Turquoise faience finger ring, with openwork Wadjet- eye.
The wadjet-eye or eye of Horus was considered to be both protective and healing. The right eye represented the sun; the left the moon. This powerful amuletic symbol with human eye and falcon markings of the sun-god Horus represent regeneration. Manufactured from two separate clay molds, as evidenced by the hundreds recovered from the excavations at the site of Amarna. Faience paste was pressed into each mold, the bezel and the shank, and the resulting pieces were joined together. Glaze was then applied, turquoise-blue in this case, and the whole ring fired.
Friedman, F. D.; Gifts of the Nile, Ancient Egyptian Faience, illus, p. 23, no. 106, for an identical example.
