A large, light turquoise glazed faience composition amulet or votive of the papyrus scepter, the wadj plant decorated with incised petals, and a central protruding rectangular ribbing atop.

The wadj-papyrus plant was very important in everyday life, it was put to numerous practical uses from sandal-making and basketry to the construction of river crafts and ropes.

Height: 4 9/10" (12.5cm)
Provenance:

Formerly in the collection of Bernard Gantner, Belfort, (1928-).

A French painter, at the age of nine years old his talent for drawing emerged. During World War II, Gantner was fortunate to have the curator from the Belfort museum as his mentor, and initiated him into the world of oil painting. At the end of the 1950's, Gantner was noticed by the great art critic Claude Roger Mars. Shortly after that, he won the Critic's Prize in 1961 and since that time Gantner's reputation never ceased to grow. Gantner’s works are influenced by Delacroix, Courbet and Jongkind.

Gantner’s fascination for antiquities was remarkable. During the 1950-60s, he assembled a fine collection of antiquities which he housed in a private museum. In 1993, the doors to his museum were open to the public until the recent dispersal of his collection.
