The infant with snakes trailing his legs, strangling each with his hands, his bottom flat as-though naturalistically seated. His muscular heroic features well indicated, his eyes drilled and hair arranged in curls.
Son of Zeus and companion Alkmene, Herakles had his life threatened by Zeus’ wife, Hera, who did not mother their child. Her jealousy and hatred towards her husband got her very angry, she attempted to kill the infant by sending snakes into his crib.
Formerly in the collection of Rodney Davidson (1933-2016), Melbourne, Australia. From the late 1940s, Mr. Davidson developed an interest in books that documented Australia’s early history, during his travels to the middle east and abroad his interest extended beyond books and into artifacts. In recognition of his public service to the heritage of the Nation he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1974 and in 1989 was made an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO). To many, Rodney was an inspiration as a collector, connoisseur, and protector of history.
For an elaborate example, see: J. Eisenberg, Art of the Ancient World, 2010, no. 60.
