The squat rounded body with raised disc rim, the lid with a central projection on the underside conforming to the vessel mouth, with two perforated horizontal handles. 5 3/5” (14.1cm) diameter, handle to handle.
Alabaster, known to geologists as travertine, the material from which these vessels are made, was prized by the ancient Egyptians for its translucence and beautiful veining. Sculptors chose a piece of stone for the decorative quality of its veins, which were further emphasized in the carving process.
For the type, compare with Ali El-Khouli, Class VII Bowls with handles and rounded bases, pl. 85, no. 2298-2300.
