A very fine green glazed faience composition amulet of a frog depicted perched on a plinth, intricately detailed with naturalistic markings, protruding eyes in manganese brown, and a feather hieroglyph on the base.
The frog represents Heqet, the goddess associated to childbirth and fertility. Both sexes wore the frog as a symbol of immortality and rebirth in the afterlife.
This small example illustrates how observant the Egyptians were of the natural forms around them and the fine workmanship of the 18-Dynasty.
Riefstahl, E.; Ancient Egyptian Glass and Glazes, Brooklyn Museum, no. 22 and 25, for parallels.
The Metropolitan Museum, accession no. 11.215.48, for a near identical example.
Cleveland Museum of Art, accession no. 1980.123, for a parallel.
