Elongated and slightly rounded in form, the abstract-like frog is finely incised with typical markings. Weight 57g.
Frogs were animals with special significance in Egypt and throughout the ancient Near East. In Egypt, the frog represented the goddess Heket, “the goddess who assisted in fashioning the child in the womb and who presided over its birth,” (R. Wilkinson, The Complete Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt, p. 229). She first appears in the Pyramid texts, where she assists the deceased king in his daily journey with the sun across the sky.
Amulets of frogs were frequent votive gifts at such Predynastic and Archaic sites at Abydos, Naqada, and Saqqara.
