Probably from Eastern Gaul, a typical example of the plain Roman redware pottery with lustre surface slip, the round bowl with flaring sides on a ring base, the underside with traces of five finger tips, the raised and pointed tondo stamped with potter’s mark ALBILLI (for Albillus).
Label at base reading "E. 2183 / LEZOUX 150-180 AD / POTTER: ALBILLUS”.
Albillus was a potter during the first half of the 2nd century A.D., his workshop located at La Madeleine near Nancy, Heiligenberg in Alsace and Rheinzabern in Germany. His vessels were widely exported throughout the Roman world.
