The defeat of Antony and Cleopatra and the installation of the Obelisk brought great celebration in Rome. Many reproduction souvenirs of the Obelisk, such as this example, were produced as a patriotic symbol and to decorate homes and cabinets, similar to how Roman sculptors produced miniature copies of Greek statues.
Acquired at a Pittsburgh auction, ca. 1998-2001.
Formerly in an American collection.
